Dear Lord

Dog's Poem

I love my human;
Therefore I perfume myself with
This long-dead squirrel.

Today I sniffed
Many dog butts - I celebrate
By kissing your face.

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.

I sound the alarm!
Mailman Fiend - come to kill us all -
Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!

I sound the alarm!
Neighbor's cat - come to kill us all!
Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!

I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush. Hello, Spot -
Sniff this and weep

My human is home!
I am so ecstatic I have
Made a puddle

I hate my choke chain -
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!

Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot - no greater bliss - well,
Maybe catching cats

I sound the alarm!
Dinner guests - come to kill us all -
Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark!

The cat is not all
Bad - she fills the litter box
With Tootsie Rolls

Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much as I do

Dig under fence - why?
Because it's there. Because it's
There. Because it's there.

I am your best friend,
Now, always, and especially
When you are eating.

My owners' mood is
Romantic - I lie near their
Feet. I fart a big one

Somewhere in the distance,
 a beagle sits atop
 his doghouse and tearfully howls,
 and a small bird,
 his very best friend, cries.
 Somewhere a fuss-budget sister
 walks up to her brother,
who is holding a security blanket,
and asks if, just this once,
he might be willing to share it.
A small toy piano on which a young boy has somehow
managed to perform some of the greatest classical
 music ever composed,
falls silent in a moment of respect.
 And on a baseball field,
a round-headed kid takes off his cap,
 lowers his head,
 and quietly says
 -- Good grief...

In Rememberance of: Charles Schultz

"He is your friend, your partner,
your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true,
to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

TOP 10 REASONS WHY IT'S GREAT TO BE A DOG

1. If it itches, you can reach it.
And no matter where it itches,
no one will be offended if you scratch it in public.

2. No one notices if you have hair growing in
weird places as you get older.

3. Personal hygiene is a blast:
No one expects you to take a bath every day,
and you don't even have to comb your own hair.

4. Having a wet nose is considered a sign of good health.

5. No one thinks less of you for passing gas.
Some people might actually think you're cute.

6. Who needs a big home entertainment system?
A bone or an old shoe can entertain you for hours.

7. You can spend hours just smelling stuff.

8. No one ever expects you to pay for lunch or dinner.
You never have to worry about table manners,
and if you gain weight, it's someone elses fault.

9. It doesn't take much to make you happy.
You're always excited to see the same old people.
All they have to do is leave the room for five minutes and come back.

10. Every garbage can looks like a cold buffet to you.

AT THE BEGINNING

When God had made the earth and sky,
 the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals and
 all the birds and bees.

And when His work was finished,
not one was quite the same.
"He said, I'll walk this Earth of mine
and give each one a name."

And so he traveled land and sea
 and everywhere He went,
 one little creature followed him
 until it's strength was spent.

When all was named upon the Earth
and in the sky and sea
this little creature said, "Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."

The Father smiled and softly said,
"I've left you to the end,
I've turned my own name back to front
and called you 'dog' my friend."

The Gates of Heaven were guarded by St. Peter. Four canine friends approached and stood waiting for permission to enter. They were asked for an account of themselves. The Cocker Spaniel was first and, leaping forward proudly, he said, "I am the showman, winning many prizes for my beauty. See how fine I am? There was none better than I in my prime. I was my master's pride and joy." He demonstrated his fine show stance. Next, the Labrador, black and glossy: "I am the Field Champion, keen for the gun, never missing a bird. I worked hard for my master." Then the German Shepherd, keen and alert. "I guarded my masters, keeping them safe. No strange foot trod the paths without my permission. They feared not with me around." "And you sir," said St Peter, "come forward to me. What of you?" The dog replied, "I am a Beagle-maybe not so good, I confess. I pursued the cat, fell to temptation, and stole food. I forgot to return to my masters' call, leaving them to worry, then showed my disapproval at being left alone by chewing their shoes. Oh, and there was also my bad habit of barking at the garbage collectors...." "But what did you give them?" asked St. Peter. "What did I give them? I gave them light in their eyes and laughter in their voices." St. Peter opened the gates and waved the Beagle through.

THE PUPPY PRAYER

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep..
I sleep right in the center groove
My human being can hardly move!
I've trapped her legs, she's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"
I sneak up slowly to begin
My nibbles on my human's chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-
I'm a puppy, don't you see?
For the morning's here
And it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs and holds me tight
And shares her bed with me at night!

Dog On Loan

I'll lend you for a little time, a
dog of mine God said.
For you to love while she lives
and mourn when she is dead.
The years they may be six or
ten or even as few as three.
But will you, 'til I call her back,
take care of her for me?

She'll bring her charms to gladden
you, and shall her stay be brief,
You'll have her lovely memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay,
since all from Earth return,
But there are lessons taught down
there I want this dog to learn.

I've looked the wide world over,
in my search for master true,
And from the throngs that crowd
life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give her your love,
nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call
to take her back again?

We answered in sincerety, Dear
Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy this dog shall bring,
the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter her with tenderness,
and lover her while we may,
And for the happiness we will
know, we'll ever grateful stay.
But shall the angels call for her
much sooner than we planned,
We'll know the bitter grief that
comes and try to understand.

A Rescue Dog's Christmas Poem

'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days..
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew -
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children:, "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.
We were left in the backyard,
or worse -let to roam-
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.
The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel,
giving each of us cheer...
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads..
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears --
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.
If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn --
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year --
can you give more than hope to everyone here?
Please make a donation to pay for the heat...
and help get us something special to eat.
The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will,
if more people will give.
